New Wortley is a deprived area of Leeds and there are undoubtedly some serious underlying social issues affecting people`s experience of living there. Therefore, in my project I'm focusing on how music can be used to tackle the complex and serious issues facing the area, but in an accessible way, that can also create social bonds between diverse demographics.

My proposal for cultural Pop-up invites people to try out a collection of sound-making and sound-related experiences. It is designed to engage people in observation, curiosity, and experimentation—the process of inquiry. But the social and civic goals were just as important. The aim is to increase people’s sense of safety and comfort and encourage them to engage with others.

The layout of the scheme is influenced of the sound propagation and that sound radiates spherically out from the central sound source. The tubes are main elements of the proposal and they are adapted to create different sound-related experiences. There are tubes with different heights and diameters that create a vibrant atmosphere. Sound evokes memory and emotion; it’s used for communication and self-expression. Chimes have long been used to call people together, and music is a proven community builder. Plus, making sound is good, active fun.

The Pop-up in New Wortley has a music classroom and three sound-related elements: Chime Tubes, Echo Tubes and Drum Tubes. As people engage with these activities, sending new sounds out across the space, they’re also changing the tone in the area, adding a more positive vibe. And hopefully the proposal will inspire a little more music.
