Structure for Play

Creating an interaction center for children in New Wortley.

An architectural Pop-up is a temporary structure assembled for a particular function and a period of time and when disassembled leaves no trace. This temporary structure lives in front of Leeds Art Gallery temporarily and is then transferred to a permanent location in New Wortley.

New Wortley is an inner-city in Leeds with a strong sense of community with its backbone being the New Wortley Community Center (NWCC). Unfortunately, It battles with issues such as crime, anti-social behaviour, high suicide rate, drug violence and so on.

Research and community engagement sessions in the community center informed my decision to focus on a place for the children in the community. By doing so, it keeps the children engaged with fun and educational activities taking them off the streets and away from illicit activities. This structure will be an extension of the community center as it already has a range of activities for children of all ages.  This would be regarded as a 'hang out spot' for children in New Wortley.
