New Wortley: Growing a Culture of Social Prescription

Function of the design:

The pop up will first be placed in front of the art gallery for two weeks in the summer for the ‘pop up and play’ event, supportng craft and drama activities.

The pop up will then be transported to New Wortley and located permanently next to the community centre.   The proposed building will support activities which will be socially prescribed, for example; craft clubs, skills based learning, choir and performance space. The building will also support a small library of books.

Technology behind the design:

The Pop Up will be made of mycelium material.  Mycelium is the vegetative part of fungus. Agricultural waste or coffee grounds can be used for the growing medium which the mycelium feeds and grows around. Once the mycelium has grown its growth is stunted by heating the substance and it can then be utilised as a building material.  The structure will be grown over a time period of the next year, within an unused building in New Wortley.

Mycelium is a sustainable material as it utilises waste to grow. When the life of the building has come to an end, it can be easily composted.

Design Features:

The Pop Up has been designed with structural panels  so it can be taken apart and then repositioned in New Wortley easily.  There is a split level which allows for the separation of the space.  This can be used for choir practice or a flexible performance space as it can be opened up to the outside, creating an outdoor event space.
